Which Woroni Wombat will you be?
One of the key findings from our 2016 Student Consultation was that students do not know how to get involved with Woroni Print, Radio (and soon to be Television). Some students also explained that they felt like you have to part of an exclusive club to get your work published in our pages, or that they were not even sure what we do.
Well, we are not an exclusive club. In fact, we aren’t even that cool. But we do have multiple media platforms and like to think we do quite a bit in the way of producing interesting, informative, accurate and relevant content, fostering student creativity and expression, and helping students develop professional journalism and media skills.

Here is your Woroni 101 Guide. Every position available, big and small, is listed below. Please have a read through and see if anything sounds like it could be your cup of tea. And don’t hold back, you can apply for more than one position!
The Editor-in-Chief is the spokesperson for ANUSM and responsible for overseeing and assisting the other Editors, as well as ensuring that the objects of the Association are upheld. The EIC is also responsible for organising events and workshops, managing employees, chairing meetings, dealing with conflicts and complaints, and assisting wherever needed. The Admin Assistant’s role is to offer administrative and clerical support to the ANUSM Board of Editors. Duties include helping plan and organise ANUSM events, archiving, procuring quotes, uploading Sub-Editor bank account details, and writing business letters, reports and memoranda. The Admin Assistant reports to the Editor-in-Chief and hours are flexible. This is a paid position that necessitates organisation, reliability, and a degree of financial and legal understanding. The Deputy Editor-in-Chief is responsible for creating and maintaining minutes, policy, procedure and records, as well as interpreting the Constitution. The Managing Editor is responsible for creating and maintaining the books and financial records of the Association and managing ANUSM’s business relationships, as well as preparing, managing and regularly reporting on the budget. Business Development Sub-Editor
The Business Development Sub-Editor works closely with the Managing Editor to secure advertising with local businesses around Canberra, assist members of the Board to create budgets for events, assist members of the Board in attaining quotes, and to investigate and create new revenue streams for ANUSM. The Marketing Sub-Editor works with the Managing Editor to undergo market research for ANUSM to identify strengths and weaknesses, while also assisting the Editor-in-Chief in planning distribution and assisting Woroni Radio and Woroni TV in implementing their marketing plans. Website Development Sub-Editor
The Website Development Sub-Editor updates and maintains the Woroni website, updates banner advertisements on the Woroni website, investigates potential tech interactions between Woroni Print, Woroni TV and Woroni Radio, and corrects any coding errors. The Events Sub-Editor is a relatively independent role at ANUSM that involves liaising with the ANU, as well as the clubs, societies, associations, publications, residencies, teams and groups on campus to create a comprehensive and up to date ANU Event Guide on the Woroni website. In addition to this, the Events Sub-Editor will write a weekly online blog detailing the must-attend events of the upcoming week, to be shared on Facebook every Sunday evening. The Content Editor is responsible for the Woroni newspaper and ensuring that the content, both in print and online, is informative, diverse, interesting and relevant to the ANU community. In addition to this, the Content Editor manages the Print Team and all that this entails. Content Sub-Editors are responsible for sourcing and editing contributions for the Woroni newspaper, in print and online. Content Sub-Editors are expected to be aware of the interests of the student body, be willing to source contributions from an array of ANU students, work with writers to edit articles and pass on valuable writing skills. Each Sub Editor will be responsible for a section – these sections are Comment, International, Features, Multilingual, Creative Writing, Arts, Reviews, Life & Style, Environment, Science, Business & Economics, Sport and Satire. Regular columns fall within sections of the paper and Regular Columnists, therefore, work with their respective Sub Editors to produce fortnightly columns. Each column should have a unique and underpinning idea and should hone in on a different aspect of this each fortnight. Columns should be 500-800 words long, depending on the section, and be of publishable quality on submission. Woroni is looking for a team of between six and eight Regular Reviewers, who we will train in the art of writing a review. The Review Team will have access to free tickets or media passes to exhibitions, performances, talks, shows, gigs, film screenings and festivals, as well as free tastings at restaurants. Reviews will be predominately published online and then shared on social media so as to be as topical as possible. Features Photographers will be responsible for planning, setting up and running a photoshoot inspired by the theme of an Edition. The images will be used in the Features section of the newspaper and on the website, with each image credited to the photographer. Depending on the number of applications we receive, photographers will be responsible for two or three Editions per Semester. We are seeking applicants who have a love for photography and are willing to push the boundaries and get creative – Woroni will assist photographers in acquiring a location, models and props. You do not need to apply to be a Woroni contributor, all you need is something you want to say, and we will help you from there. If you know you want to write, but do not know where to start, then join the Woroni Contributors 2.0 Facebook group, where the Print Team will be pitching ideas and looking for authors on a regular basis.
The Distributor is responsible for collecting the Woroni newspaper from Capital Fine Printing in Fyshwick every Monday fortnight and distributing the papers around the ANU Campus. Social Media (Facebook) Sub-Editor
The Social Media Sub-Editor will predominately look after the Woroni Facebook page. Close collaboration with the Content, News and Television Editors is crucial as articles and videos on the website often need to be shared as soon as they are uploaded. The Social Media Sub-Editor should be organised, creative and have ideas for how to make the Woroni Facebook page as engaging, interactive and like-worthy as possible. The Instagram Sub-Editor is in charge of the Woroni Instagram, and the role involves taking photos as well as uploading them. The Instagram Sub-Editor will have a significant degree of independence, but should regularly post images that reflect on happenings across ANUSM – this could include photos of the team, events, radio hosts, the television team shooting, the newspaper, et cetera. The News Editor manages the News Team, while also reporting and investigating news relevant and interesting to ANU students. It is the responsibility of the News Editor to ensure ANUSM is engaging students with factual and balanced reporting so that they are well informed and aware of the debates, controversies and happenings surrounding them. News Correspondents should be good writers who are bold, persistent and sharp. They are responsible for reporting on and investigating matters that interest ANU students. They will gain valuable skills in journalism not offered at the ANU. In particular, they will learn how to conduct interviews, investigate, build networks, follow campus news, and write competently with journalistic tone. The Art Editor is in charge of the Design and Art Sub-Editors and is responsible for making sure every platform within Woroni – Print, Radio, Television and Photography – is visually appealing and creative. Joanne has been a part of the Woroni Team for longer than any other Editor and has helped rebrand ANUSM over the past 12 months. The Design Sub-Editor helps create visual material for Woroni and works with Art Editor to layout the paper using InDesign. The Design Sub-Editor is also responsible for a team of illustrators and may be required to submit some illustrations themselves. The role can also include designing graphics for social media, and designing banners, posters and other promotional materials for Woroni Print, Radio and TV. Regular Illustrators will work as part of the Design Team to create illustrations to accompany articles and contributions, in print and online. The workload will be flexible, but three contributions per fortnight would be desirable. There is a huge degree of freedom to be creative in this role, but it is important that members of the Illustrations Team are organised, reliable and able to meet deadlines. The Art Sub-Editor sources artwork from ANU students to be photographed and used to accompany written works in the newspaper. Sometimes, the Art Sub-Editor may also interview artists (or organise an interview) and submit their artwork and responses for a half or full-page spread in the Features or Art section of the newspaper. Additionally, the Art Sub-Editor might be asked to find an artist to design the front page of the Woroni newspaper. The Art Sub-Editor should be involved in the ANU School of Art and be willing to work hard to establish connections on campus. The Television Editor, in 2017, is primarily responsible for establishing Woroni TV. The purpose of Television will be to engage with more of the ANU student body by providing a new and interactive platform to deliver on and off-campus news. The Television Manager is responsible for supporting the Television Sub-Editor and is a role that requires more hours than that of a Television Reporter or Camera Operator. Duties include attending meetings, creating graphics, filming, editing and training Sub-Editors. After the Television Team is selected a Television Manager will be appointed internally.
Television Reporters are responsible for writing scripts, creating video content and assisting with basic editing. Reporters must be confident on camera and ready to learn about editing, graphics, script writing and reporting techniques. Television Camera Operator
The Television Camera Operator is mainly responsible for recording footage, but the role will also require working with the team to create content and assisting with basic video editing. Photography Sub Editors are responsible for representing Woroni at events on and off campus. In 2017 the role will also include working with the Print Team to provide photos to support content. Oscar Jolly and Finn Pederson
Our Radio Editors are responsible for managing the Woroni Radio Team and community, supervising the content that goes on air, and then monitoring and expanding the distribution of that content. In 2017, Oscar and Finn will be increasing the presence of Woroni Radio on-campus, uniquely branding each radio show, creating a more professional broadcasting room and giving consistent and high-quality feedback to every Radio Contributor. The Music Sub-Editor is responsible for the creation and update of Woroni Radio’s 24-hour music playlist. Duties also include forming links with music festivals and artists for interviews and reviews. The Presenter Liaison is the first point of contact for Radio Contributors. They are responsible for creating a weekly schedule, regulating communication channels with current and potential contributors and then relaying these wants and needs to the Radio Editors. In addition to this, the Present Liason will also be required to supervise Radio’s live broadcast one night a week at the Woroni Office during term times. Social Media Sub-Editor
The Social Media Sub-Editor is responsible for Radio’s social pipes. In 2017 they will work to share interesting articles, posts and music with the end goal of making the page fun, interesting and active. The Social Media Sub-Editor will also help expand Radio’s reach to Instagram and other social media platforms. In addition to this, the Social Media Sub-Editor will also be required to supervise Radio’s live broadcast one night a week at the Woroni Office during term times. The Technical Officer is responsible for maintaining and expanding Woroni Radio’s technical equipment. They will be the first point of contact for any technical issues. Events and Sports Sub-Editor
The Events and Sports Sub-Editor is responsible for organising on-campus sports commentary, continuously looking for new event opportunities and organising Radio events and parties. The role also includes representing Woroni Radio at events around Canberra and reporting back to the Radio Editors when applicable. In addition to this, the Events and Sports Sub-Editor will also be required to supervise Radio’s live broadcast one night a week at the Woroni Office during term times.
