Market Day this Semester is shaping up to be quite different from the O-Week event held in Semester 1 this year. Unlike in Semester 1, this Market Day will not be broken into separate sessions, but instead will run continuously from 10am – 4pm. Physical distancing and check-in restrictions will still apply, and students will only be able to walk in one direction around the stalls in the ANU Sports Hall.
ANUSA’s Social Officer, Sophie Jaggar, states that following criticism of O-Week’s Market Day, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) will not be permitted to return this Market Day. This is due to the fact that some members of ANUSA voiced objections to the ADF’s presence as they felt it contravened ANUSA’s ethical sponsorship policy, which forbids sponsorship from organisations that promote militarism.
Jaggar also stated that “Pro-life organisations will also not be attending Market Day”. This decision comes in response to Market Day in Semester 1, where a pro-life stall was permitted to attend, and was placed next to 50/50 (an organisation which assists women wishing to enter STEM fields). This decision sparked controversy amongst ANU students.
For students currently stuck interstate or overseas, a Virtual Market Day is being organised by General Representative Isha Singhal, and will run from 4pm to 5:30pm on Thursday.
